Talismans, amulets and other methods of capturing magic or spirits inside physical objects are a well-known foundation of the work here at Practical Occult. Pentacles, items of antiquity and more line the digital walls of the shop to be purchased by discerning individuals each and every day.
However, there are as many ways to make an amulet as there are cultures and systems of magic that even ponder the practice. From the Prai amulets of Thailand to the astrological talismans found in Picatrix, one could be forgiven for feeling a bit overwhelmed. Which is the strongest sort of handheld or worn item filled with a handful of magic? Whose toys have the most shine?
The answer is never easy to discern and, yet, is so very often sought. The reality of growth within magic is that trial and error must be courted constantly as well as ongoing education. Finding sources of information in magic can feel, at times, like taking one step forward only to take two steps back as the lion’s share of classes purchased end up being rehashed history lessons or attempts at personal grandstanding without any shred of actionable method in them. Some even come with the tailor-made indignity of refusing to point out sources for further information.
Truly tragic, in our estimation.
To this end, we recommend Jason Miller’s recent Arcane Audio on the subject. A veteran of over three decades of magical experience, Jason opines in his signature way about various amulets he has owned, some he has made and how they all fit together in his experience. He even provides methods for the listener to go about making some similar items themselves. Truly a bridge between the theoretical and the practical.
The class spans several traditions and modalities, all very well-honed by Miller himself who is well-versed in a number of arcanas. Truly, there is something for every occultist who makes it a point to listen to the material. It is all meat and no fluff, much to our relief, and is not full of belabored points and played-out diatribes that manage to go nowhere while wasting the listener’s time. From start to finish the content within is entirely worthwhile.
It’s no secret that in the occult community there are about as many strongly-held opinions as there are occultists, for better and for worse, and it can come as a difficult prospect to find educational material that serves as both enlightening to the mind and a practical enhancement to one’s magic. Living up to our name as always, we at Practical Occult focus heavily on instruction that can do both and happily point out and celebrate its existence outside our walls and in.
We heartily recommend this class and others like it by Jason Miller. If you want to take a class and walk away immediately able to begin doing something, you will get your wish with this one.
